Thanks for the reply to my note from yesterday.  (Yes, it's not been 
that long, so far.)  Unfortunately, I get the same errors from the copy
of the Tech Note which is stored at sumex-aim as I do from the one at Apple.

I realized this morning that I could look at the sample code that John Norstad
graciously provides with Disinfectant, to see how HE scans volumes.  So I did.
Thanks, John, for providing this code.  It really helps.  I'll acknowledge 
you in the program.
