Please ignore the above. Having now fully demonstrated my ignorance of some 
UNIX (really just lack of practice), I want to retract the plea for help.
Several people have pointed out my mistake (and they didn't even rub my 
nose in it!). Thanks for helping politely. My apologies to any and all 
offended UNIX gurus. For anyone interested, AltDock and NX_VOID work 
fine under 2.0.
