If this is a duplicate, I apologize. I have not been able to get Emacs 18.55 to compile programs. When I do M-x compile, the compilation hangs. gcc gets fired up, but when gcc-cpp exits it's process becomes a zombie (). The same command works on our sun machines (SunOS 4.1.1), so I'm inclined to think the problem is with the A/UX port of emacs 18.55.
