    I have another problem, and that is that I have to have higher-level access
    in order to move things into the app-defaults directory when I am installing
    X applications for my personal use. If I set the XAPPLRESDIR variable to a
    personal app-defaults directory, I have to link in all the other app-defaults
    files in this directory. (If there is another way, please let me know.)
    

You want to be setting XUSERFILESEARCHPATH instead; that variable does
take a path argument.
