We've had a Sun 3/80 (running SunOS 4.0.3) linking up with a UUCP neighbor
for many months with no problems to speak of.  We use a 2400 baud Hayes modem
hooked up to the cua0 port.

A few days ago, for some strange reason that I haven't been able to trace,
the communication between the Sun and the modem got screwed up.  I can still
go in and use "tip maint" to send modem commands but I can't dial out using 
the ATDT dialing commands.  I get the error "can't synchronize with hayes" and
ocaasionally get an "all ports busy" message from the Sun.  To my knowledge,
the /etc/remote file has not been changed (I compared it with an earlier 
version).  We have tried fastbooting the Sun with no change.  Previously the
AA (auto-answer) LED on the modem was lit up but it isn't any more.  I have
tried resetting the modem to its original internal settings, as well as power
cycling it, all to no avail. 
 
I also tried removing any strange lock files but could find only one (can't
remember the file name) and I removed it.
