A good recent review article is:
Ellis, C. A., Gibbs, S. J. & Rein, G. L.
Groupware: Some issues and  experiences
_Communications of the ACM_, Jan. 1991, vol. 24, no. 1, 39 - 58.

They define groupware:

computer-based systems that support
groups of people engaged in a common 
task (or goal) and that provide
an interface to a shared environment


I would like to update the newsgroup definition to
