I would like it to have the following: a good keyboard, for touch typing a clear, readable screen--backlit not necessary, nor is full 80x25 built-in "wordprocessor" other built-in utilities: for file transfer, etc long battery life LOW cost DOS compatibility NOT a must To give some background: I'm a student on a budget with a loaded 386sx system at home--so I don't need power in the little machine. I want to be able to edit papers at the library, write letters wherever I am, take notes on meetings, and other mundane little chores. Machines that I've seen that seem to fit the criteria are: 1) Laser PC/4: cost $249.99, incl. Wordprocessor w/spell checker (100K words), Lotus-compatible spreadsheet, file transfer sw, 2MB ROM (for the wp & spreadsheet), 32K static RAM std, 128K RAM optional ($59.99), case, AC adapter, docs. Runs 40 hours on three standard AA batteries (so they say). 2) Tandy WP-2: cost $349.99, incl. Wordprocessor, spell checker, thesaurus, utilities. 22K RAM. The Laser is what is most interesting right now. It's roughly comparable to the Tandy 102, which costs $599 at my local Radio Shack dealer. The screen is only 40x4, but according to an article in the March issue of Computer Shopper, it's great. (Oh, it's 2 lbs.) If anyone has any further information/experience with this machine or other similar machines, please e-mail me. Thanks in advance! Lily Koessel lily@jessica.stanford.edu
