There was no concensus since the problem occurs on a number of different
machines and system software versions.  Nor could the problem be localized
to mice of a particular origin (it occurs on mice from Malaysia, Taiwan
and USA).

In my case, I took the mouse back to the dealer for a replacement and
have not seen the problem since.
