Is it possible to run X11.4 clients under a X11.3 server?

I am trying to do just that with an old release of ISC's (386 unix)
runtime X 11.3.  Since I don't have the development system, I was
hoping I could use X386 R11.4 libraries to link X clients.  Whenever I
try to run one of these client I get the message:

Error: Can't open display.

Is this something easy to fix? A bug in the server or is it just not
possible ?
