I'm interested in purchasing a crossbow, and would like to get a feel
for which brand/size/etc. would be good for a novice.  I don't think
I'll be doing any hunting with it (well, aside from squirrels and
gophers on our farm in northern Wisconsin :-) , probably just target
practice.

In addition, how are crossbows regulated for non-hunting activities?
