What it says is that we must strive to be like Jesus. We must getter with our sins everyday. This means that if you are continually dealing with the sin of sexual immorality then God will not look upon you favorably if you do not get rid of that sin. It goes like this: you sin, you repent, and try not to do it again. If you keep sinning in the same manner, you have not repented, therefore not striving to be like Jesus, therefore, not a disciple or a Christian.
