The details of what is done with dog tags are a bit gory, so here's a for those who just ate lunch. The US custom is to issue two tags, at death the grave detail places one tag into the anus, with the chain sticking out, and one goes into the mouth, which is then pressed closed, to hold the tag in place. This is only done until the dead can be retrieved for later burial, of course.
