another approach: try a Printronix dot-matrix printer (us$7000.)
they are full 600-line-per-minute impact printers
capable of high-resolution (well, 72x60 dpi) ribbon-based printing.
they  do LARGE TEXT and BARCODES fairly well...

they  are not inherently PostScript, just heavy-duty reliable 
printers...
