Certainly, it makes sense, for prototyping to use the above, but DO NOT
OVERLOOK the Director II for this type of task.  I have used it for the
type of applications you describe.  It isn't for everyone; some notion
of programming concepts is necessary to get the most use out of it, but
it has some capabilities NOT found in the products described above, and
thus would be important to include in your study.
