Ian,

Have you checked to see if you have Apple's PrintMonitor in your System Folder?
A while back when I tried Multispool on my system, I had the same kind of 
problems that you seem to be having and it turned out that Multispool requires
PrintMonitor to function properly (or at least solved the problem in my case).
