Summary: logout to see effects and be a UNIX nonexpert

  Someone asked a while back about .hidden files not taking effect. Three
  1. *Not* have UNIX expert checked in Preferences.
  2. Log out and log back in.
  3. Not find a hidden file with the finder. Once you do that, you're 
     automatically UNIX expert until you log out again.
