[long excuse deleted.] Finally I have obtained a satisfactory solution from Sun-Flex (20 Pimentel Court Novato, California, USA 94949 Telephone +1 415 883 1221) who make a fine mesh that fits behind the bezel of the monitor. It really reduces reflections and only seems to have one potential problem - getting dirty from sticky fingers. The mesh reduces light transmission by about 40%, so compensating by increasing the brilliance can also reduce the image sharpness (ah well nothing's perfect). I have also looked at clip on and hang down type glass filters, they are easier to clean but very ineffective in reducing reflections (some actually create new ones!).
