There is a PC version of the Unix compress program; I forget where I saw
it, but it is probably available in the archives at simtel20 or wuarchive.

There is also a Mac version; it's called Mac Compress and it's available
at the sumex-aim archive.

I've used both of these successfully; they seem to be fully compatible
with Unix compress.
