Subject: is there any freeware for solving large NL system of equations?

we need to solve large (100 to 500 by 10) nonlinear systems of equations.
I know IMSL does it, but for various resoans cann't get to that fast 
enough.  If there is any free ware (fortran or C, prefer C) that would
do the job, I would be happy to hear about it.
