For me, it is sometimes hard to > determine just what is officially approved, and what isn't. It now seems to be pretty well accepted that there's going to be a split into a "discussion" group (the old comp.os.minix), and a "source" group. The idea sounds reasonable for administrative purposes (having a separate source group is fine, when it comes to archives). Having a separate group for upgrades and official (i.e. fixes or new software that is going to actually appear in P-H released Minix) sounds like a good idea too. Of course, I agree with kjh that such a group would have to be moderated by the official Minix authors (i.e. andy, frans and all the others) to prevent anarchy. Such a group would have no traffic at all for months, then get a whole burst of postings (no doubt the much awaited 1.6 "transition" version :-) and a small residual activity (1.6.356, 357, and so on :-) but would make life easier for all of us. But, whatever the decision is, don't forget the mailing-list world of Minix fans. I, for example, still get The Newsgroup using a complex path (thru bitnet, internet, X25 and modems, with four or five different different versions of news-style software) for communication costs purposes. The List is still an important part of the minix life, and don't rush to add one (or two) newsgroups on the Usenet without having consulted with Glen Overby about the setup of the new list.
