The DEC vt100 has a very strange set of line-wrap behaviours, and attempts to properly emulate them or deal with them are a frequent cause of problems. I think you should set the terminal to "no wrap" and let screen handle the wrapping itself. Basically, if you have any options available as to what terminal to use or emulate, DON'T make it a DEC (or a Televideo/adm type, either).
