I pulled and reinstalled all of the DIPs and reseated the PLCCs, and it's been reliably booting since (no chants were required). I was a little surprised, since the sockets were tight and there wasn't any visible corrosion. If it becomes a chronic problem, I'll consider retrofitting the board with more reliable sockets. Thanks to all who responded - I appreciate the fact that this group is patient with, and helpful to, a novice user. If only the local dealer were as useful.
