   I believe that you are referring to the creatures with a globe at the top 
and jellyfish-like tentacles hanging below, which fade in and out?  As noted 
above, vorpal blades and Dispell spells are most effective against them.  

   Fireballs, poison, et.al. have only minimal effects, and you have to back 
the creatures against a wall to do any damage with these spells.
