Thanks to the several people who responded to my query about fortran
compilers.  It seems that Language Systems Fortran is compiler of
choice with one person mentioning Absoft's compiler.

Both of these compilers require Apple's MPW.  Absoft sells a non-MPW
version, but it is supposedly buggy.
