[request for an 'easier (smaller)' RPG than Bard's Tale deleted]

I suggest you try Theldrow.  It's available at sumex.  It is quite a bit
smaller than Bard's Tale.

Once you get that, try these series:
Might and Magic (II is MUCH better than I)
Wizardry (only the 1st two are out; dungeon exploration.  The grandaddy)
Ultima (only II and III are out for the mac, but good games nonetheless)
