I fixed this problem, I think, by opening my Mac and reseating
the Apple ROM.  I also wiggled the memory chips, zapped my PRAM
and lowered my ATM font cache from 1024 to 512.

I have a 5 Meg SE/30.  While it was open I noticed that 2 of the
4 256K chips have parity and 2 do not.  Could that cause problems?
