Much of that is a result of the interface (Window, Mice, Menus, etc.), which is nice for the user, but rough on the programmer. Have you checked out X Windows, yet? Now that's difficult! But that's what comes with the GUI. We are still some years away from easy GUI programming for all, unfortunately.
