Can someone refresh my memory.

Lately my system has been giving me a large number of -42 errors, (Too many 
files open).  I need to increase the number of open files my system can do.  I 
can't remember how to do such.  Can someone give me a pointer to such.  (I 
tried looking the SYSTEM with RESEDIT, but nothing leaped out at me.)
