Reply-To: ken@staff.UUCP (Ken McGregor) Organization: Dept. of Computer Science, University of Cape Town Lines: 22 I have looked at the computer system of a company running an NCR 850. This is a large system with 4AP's, 3FP's, 3CC's and 2-3Ep's. They recently moved the users from the CC's to terminal servers connected to Ethernet. They are using WIN/TCP on the 850. Since then the performance has significantly degraded. When running sar the sys time has gone up by about 20-25% and the user time dropped from 40% to 15% with obvious decrease in response. I have the following questions 1. Is this normal and can it be tuned? 2. What is TCP/IP doing in the AP as the EP's are meant to be intelligent so surely the packetizing/depacketizing is done there? If not what is the intelligent EP with its own downloaded kernel doing? They are thinking of buying a number of 3000's but are concerned that the same thing will happen again and are not too happy with WIN/TCP. Is there an alternative to WIN e.g. Lachman? Can anyone please help me with this? Ken MacGregor ken@cs.uct.ac.za Computer Science ken%uctcs%quagga@uunet.uu.net University of Cape Town ...uunet!{m2xenix!quagga,ddsw1!olsa99}!uctcs!ken
