Yeah, I have the same question (sort of).  Why does this not work:
\vfill\hbox{...}\vfill\eject\end
but this does:
\hbox{}\vfill\hbox{...}\vfill\eject\end
The idea is to vertically center the stuff in the middle \hbox.
