Subject: Making an Abstract in twocolumn article format

  After looking through the LaTeX book, and trying various things I'm posting
  to this group for help..

  I am using two-column mode with the report format.  I would like to have the
  abstract be in one column, under the title.  Then I want the rest of the
  paper in two-column format (See below).  I haven't found anyway to do this.

			  Document Title
			    Eli Charne
			       Date

			     ABSTRACT
			my abstract goes here
			in one column format

		column  1  goes      column  2  goes
		here        and      here        and
		continues along      continues along

  Someone suggested putting a 
  
	 \twocolumn[my abstract here] rest of paper here
  
  in the document.  That will format the abstract in one column, but it skips
  a page before formatting the abstract.  

  Any help appreciated!
