I would like to add that the paster has the choice, either to put all the data into the clipboard during cut/copy or shortly after that (the method of the Macintosh), or to do it much later, on demand, and only for the requested format. For small amounts of data it is simpler to put everything into the clipboard immediately. But it is quite usefull that an application can announce a format for which it has to generate the actual data only if there is somebody (another application, that is), who actually requests it.
