Thank you thank you thank you to the more than a dozen people who sent very
informative information on displaying GIFs on the root window. I was
told of "xloadimage", "xv", "ImageMagick" and a couple of other ways to do
this task. I have successfully loaded a GIF on the root window with
xloadimage, and will investigate the other options soon. Again, many thanks
to those of you who took the time out to help an X-novice. We're having
great fun!
