You may want to pick up the latest issue of Shareware magazine (Mar/Apr).
It has an article entitled "So You Want To Be a Successful Shareware
Author..." by Steve Hudgik.  He has also written a book entitled "Writing
and Marketing Shareware"  which is advertized in the back (in the Classifieds
section).  There are a few other books mentioned there as well as outfits
looking for good shareware programs to distribute.
