Date: Sat, 30 Mar 91 05:28:12 GMT I have to move about 600meg of data from a mainframe (MVS) to a Unix machine across a relatively slow network. I really should be using tapes, but it is a real pain. The data that I have transfered compresses extremely well using 'compress'. I was getting 7-1 compression ratio. I am looking for a compression program which runs on MVS and Unix so that I can reduce the transfer time from over a day to about 4 hours (assuming I can achieve similar results to compress). The data to be transfered is 'text' (numbers, letters, blanks, etc.) Does anyone out there have any ideas ? Larry Dunkelman Bell-Northern Research larryd!bnrmtl@larry.mcrcim.mcgill.edu
