And for file transfers, I always use >PEP. We have a handful of USR Dual standards and Telebit T2500s. A few weeks ago we had a power supply go out in a T2500. While it was at the factory I gave a USR dual standard to the guy who was using the 2500 (at his house). He found that the USR would connect, but then hang up after a while. The modem at the other end was a telebit T2500. It was really annoying. During some testing (of yet another problem with the USR) I found that sometimes when the T2500 calls the USR the link will drop after some time. The USR ati7 says the reason was Link Disconnect Received. Anyhow after upgrading the USR to 9/29/89 roms, the problem went away. My point is that there are lots of V.32 mfrs whose modems might have bugs. When you connect V.32, you are not neccessarily connecting to another telebit V.32. (Calling around Silicon Valley, [BBSs I take it?] you are probably getting USRobotics modems at the other end.) Also, I would find it rare if some mfr had this kind of problem with their modems at *both* ends. When you connect PEP, there is always a telebit at the other end. Telebit has the luxury of not having to worry about compatibilty issues with other mfrs modems. The same argument can be made for HST.
