Just a quick check for you...did you tell VLT that your serial device
is now called modem0.device instead of serial.device?  There should be
a program included with the modem that will search through VLT and
replace all occurances of serial.device with modem0.device.  And of
course, modem0.device has to be in your DEVS directory.
 
I'm not familiar with VLT (other hearing accolades about it) so there
might be a menu item that you can type modem0.device in as the
default serial driver for the terminal.
