In high-res mode you just got on or off. I must disagree -- assuming by 'remotely nice' we mean as good as VGA. One may convert GIFs to Spectrum 512 format. Perhaps the best utility for converting them is DIGISPEC, a commercial desk accessory. There are other GIF conversion programs for the ST, but some will not do Spectrum 512 format, and others won't convert to Spectrum 512 as well as Digispec. I think a good comparison is the CLOWN pic: it looks good in VGA, and as good or better in Spec512 format on an ST, IMHO.
