Sounds like you need:
	HP 98630-90001:  _HP 98630 Breadboard Interface Installation and
			  Programming_
This includes a schematic for the breadboard card and other information of
possible use.  Also:
	HP 09800-90011:  _Accessory Development Guide for HP 9000 Series
			  200/300 Computers_
This manual appears to be a fairly complete description of the DIO bus.
I think this is the backplane description you want.  One more item, which
won't be needed with a 9816, but which I list for completeness sake:
	HP 98562-90010:  _DIO II Accessory Development Guide for HP 9000
			  Models 330/350 Computers_
I don't know if these manuals are still available.

There is no 68881 in a 9816.  That came later.

You'll find some of that in the manuals listed above.

I think that's service notes for the HP repair people, but I haven't seen
one since 9835/45 days.

Yes.  This was first documented in the 5.0/5.1 manuals, but has been in
the language from the beginning.  See READIO/WRITEIO in the _BASIC 5.0/5.1
