Well, this is where I screwed up.... The DBM code is apparently not needed. The problem was not with rn, it was with the way I set up news. I didn't define DOXREF, so inews was not providing the xref info that rn needs to avoid reading dupe articles. Apparently the "DBM" code in bits.c is not needed to perform this function.
