The answer to a memory crunch is to buy more RAM... it's cheap. System 7 addresses multitasking, publish/subscribe paradigm, significant user interface goodies, built-in file share, and lots more. ALL of that runs without a PMMU. Virtual memory is a boondoggle devised in the days of Sculley's expensive RAM blooper.
