i get this all the time.  in fact, on one machine, i can no longer
login as root.  (actually, I think I get signal 10.)  NeXT knows about
this problem.  Don't let them deny it.

my last correspondence with NeXT they suggested that it is a nfs problem 
related to permissions.   with the window server?  doesn't make sense but
who knows.
