I have no relation whatsoever to the GNU project, but I have to say he's absolutely right. The code the Sun compiler produces is crapola, compared to what gcc does on the Sun (Sparc). The code looks much better (that is, much more like what I might write by hand), and in fact runs consistently faster. In fact, I haven't seen any compiler that makes better code than gcc, though I have heard legends of the BLISS compiler of yesteryear ... Mark Adler madler@pooh.caltech.edu
