Select SGI as the domain name. Do not use a /etc/hosts file with domain names, use the ordinary plain /etc/hosts file. Enjoy electronic mail including forwarding of mail between all parties involved exept with DEC VAX/VMS machines running the Wollongong WIN/TCP software. Mail sent to these machines gets bounced ("Remote protocol error"). It is a workaround for the configuration problem of SGI machines for the scenario described above. Much would be gained if SGI could come up with a configuration of their current sendmail.cf file (IRIX 3.3.2) for a net with no domain addressing. At least this would help those who had not a chance so far to switch to domain addressing and it may be of interest to others, too.
