I did find a reference in the LaTeX manual (page 96) to "\hspace*{\fill}" -- but neither the TeX nor the LaTeX manual mentions hfill* or vfill*. I checked every cross-reference under "hfil" and "hfill" to be sure, as well as most under "vfil". And while \hspace*{\fill} does have an effect, it doesn't seem to solve my original problem, which was to get \epsffile figures centered on the page. (When I tried \hfill*, I got an asterisk in my figure, so I presume you misremembered and were thinking of \hspace*).
