Noise problems with the Sharp GP1U52 IR receiver module can be greatly
reduced by electrically connecting signal ground to the metal can
enclosing the sensor itself.

Nowhere does it tell you this on the Radio Shack specs, or on some
spec sheets I got from Sharp.  I read this info in a letter someone
submitted to Radio Electronics; thanks a bunch to whoever that was!
