Getting all the black ink out of them is time-consuming, as well, but it can be done (or at least MOST of the black ink...) > 3. How much ink is provided. Is it as much as is in a standard cartridge? It takes about 15 ml to fill a cartridge, or about 0.5 oz. A couple years back, a fellow in INFO wrote about how he had used food coloring in his Xerox 4020 with great results.
