If you really want to run these big shot packages, you sure need at
least the AT board, preferred accelerated a bit by 3rd party products
(there are modified AT boards by company X-Pert here in Germany or
386SX accelerator boards that should also be available in US).

Can't guarantee for all these software packages, but they sure mean
a real load for the machine. (If you lived in Europe, I would explain
quite prudently, that Commodore here also sells a full line of MS-DOS
ATs for comparable price...)

Yes, you can put a VGA card in, but then you need another monitor. And
admittedly, not every VGA card runs in such a combination. A colleague
uses a card with a Paradise VGA chip on it with great success.

Ca. factor 3 in performance.
And the pure AT board runs at 8 MHz (only :-).
