	Well, can't speak about the Apollo environment, but several years
ago I wrote a tar stacking routine to accomplish just that for the Zilog. It
took advantage of the "no-rewind" option associated with the tape devices.
It also includes "read" and "extract" options. If you want to play with this
shell script (comes with man page), let me know.
