I just got a bat(s) warning on my calculator which means the calculator batteries were low. I have 2 smith corona cards in my calc, 1 merged, 1 independant for backup. I replaced the calc's batteries with no problem. As to your second question, I don't think there such a thing as a relatively cheap HP 32K brand card.
